Plans to produce such a camera Zeiss Ikon had since the end of 1930, and the introduction of the pentaprism viewfinders was a key element of the project. However, the outbreak of World War II prevented the implementation of these ideas. This idea was realized until by the Contax S.
Contax S is 35mm SLR camera launched by the VEB Zeiss Ikon in 1949.
The new camera was developed under the direction of Wilhelm Winzenburg. It was an innovative design with fixed pentaprism finder. For the construction of the shutter slit used rubbered fabric. The camera lens is mounted on a 42×1 mm thread, introduced by Praktiflex and which has become a widely used standard. Unfortunately, the Contax S structure is not very robust.
A typical lens was black anodized Biotar 2/5,8 T production of Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1952, the camera was replaced by the Contax D, and in the years 1956-1961 produced Contax F also branded as Pentacon F.
In Contax F / Pentacon F introduced.

  •  an automatic diaphragm release, that is a linkage between body and lens that closes the diaphragm when the shutter release is pressed. The Contax F was the first camera to have this device.
  • a bigger mirror
  • bigger winding and rewind buttons.

Pentacon F production was transferred to the Kamera Werke in Niedersiedlitz.
The camera is really beautiful and has a very interesting mechanism for the shutter. Noteworthy is fitting roller blinds, partly on the screws, not only on the adhesive such as the Praktica. However, very there is delicate control a mirror by a rope.
